I've been visiting Thailand for about 10 years and lived in Pattaya and Bangkok for about 3 years between 2005 and 2008, had a small beer bar in Pattaya for a time. Umbrella Madness...

I find this some what amusing.

Everyday i walk to work (have about a 5min walk), i almost get my eyes poked out by umbrellas.
Since i´m a little bit taller then these ladies going to their offices and they use their umbrellas not to get to much sun on them, it will soon end up with them being light skin, and i´m going to become a cyclops.

I mean, when it´s raining ok, when it´s sunny why care, nice with a bit of a tan
But also when it´s cloudy outside, only when it´s dark the umbrellas are gone most of the times.

It has it´s charm, but please, when you see a taller falang walking on Asoke and you are coming my way, please lift it up so it goes over my head, i like to keep my eyes

OK. I am new, so lets get that out of the way.

I am a young-gun 24 year old lost soul who just loves being nosy. I just finished up a 6 year term from the Air Force and I am ready to live life by spending a couple years in Thailand. I want to stay in many villages. My thai speaking skills are below average but I can speak Lao fluently. Another tid-bit is I finished school while in service so I hope to go for my Master's in bio-chem AFTER my soul searching adventure in Thailand. I want to hear about an average day-in-a-life for a thai person.

Although I am particularly more interested in what daily life is like in Thailand (city or village) I wouldn't mind hearing about anyone else' day just to see offer myself a different view.

I just posted here because hopefully someone from Thailand might tell me about their day...

Hi all

I hope i am in the right place, if not, can someone point me in the right direction.

I will be arriving in BK in 10 days time for a 2 week holiday,and i really would like to
have someone show me around during the day time, all the sights along the
Chao Phraya river and in particular along the klongs for a day or 2, and then a day in
China Town, followed by any other places of interest.

This is mainly a photography trip and want to do as much photography i can, in the short time i am there
,so i want someone (prefer a female) who can speak & understand reasonable english and knows her way around Bangkok and
has the time to spend all day, and maybe part of the evening with me.
I am willing to pay daily expenses(i am not rich) and a fee for your time.

Hi, I'm a 40 year old guy from California. I've been coming to Thailand every year for the last 8 years. I'm in BKK now and seriously considering living here full time. I just love it in Thailand and I'm also Buddhist, so it seems like a great fit for me. I'm the only farang I know who would rather visit a temple than a gogo bar...

I'm a single guy and also looking for a wife. I'm not into bar girls at all, so I'm not worried about all the pitfalls that go with that.

However, I'm a bit worried from all the posts I see online about guys getting ripped off, jilted, etc by women and their families. Is it really as bad as people say?

I don't see many positive stories on that front - are there any stories of decent guys finding love and settling down to have a family here?

My other question is any pointers for activities and things to do outside bars, temples and shopping. Where can I go for other activities, to meet other westerners and enjoy my time here?

I struck this news today.

Over 50 foreigners not to marry

It copies a law passed in Cambodia, prohibiting foreign men over 50 marrying Cambodian women. Typically such laws in Laos and Cambodia have NGO input. The ramifications are endless.

Can a 50 year old man marry a 49 year old Thai woman? Probably not.
Such a marriage is cited as enabling the falang to bond 400K instead of 800K for a retirement visa. However, the cost of the wedding and sinsot is spent money which may negate any difference.
Apparently the law won't be retro active so existing marriages will be respected.

There is talk too of normalising this law across ASEAN nations.

Not yet paased into legislation, is such a proposal of any benefit to anyone?

Hello...I'm hoping to get some thoughtful advice from some Experienced Ex-Pats who may have gone through what I am going through.

I'm 48, living in California, and presently going through a divorce after 19 years as a faithful husband. She left me for another guy. I am not "Rich," but I do have money, and if I cash out of America and head to Thailand, which is what I am thinking about doing, I (Think) I can survive OK on interest payments and growth of my stock trading portfolio, periodic management consulting jobs with Asian companies (or European for that matter), some Internet Businesses I'd like to start, and through writing (articles and books)...as a last resort I'd pursue teaching English...I have a Secondary School Teaching license, and a Masters Degree in Instructional Design/Learning/Performance, although I am no longer a "High School Teacher" in America...I'm an Organizational Development & Training Professional for Corporations.

Right now, all I feel like doing is just cashing out, leaving America for good, going to Thailand (Chiang Mai?), getting to work to relieve my sadness and sorrow over my failed marriage, meeting and spending fun time with 2 or 3 (NON-PRO) girlfriends, and never looking back.

My plan is to rent an inexpensive apartment or house...I don't drink (yet), so there is no expense there...I don't eat alot, so small expenses there...so my conservative estimate is that I figure I should be able to generate and live on about $30,000 - $40,000 US dollars per year?

I mentioned Chaing Mai because I've heard good things about it as a modern "Cosmopolitan" city, and that it is cooler, which is important to me. I also have heard that living in Bangkok, Phuket, Pattaya, and other beach areas isn't all that great due to all the tourists and hustle and bustle, but I could be wrong.

Again, I'm just hoping that some highly experienced Ex-Pats might be able to give me some thoughtful advice on what they think about my situation, my plan, my future, things to look out for, etc.
